The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.

The Chair opened the meeting with the Haldimand County Land Acknowledgement.

Minutes from January 9, 2025 meeting are being prepared. Approval of January 9, 2025 Seniors Advisory Committee meeting minutes DEFERRED. 

None.

    ​THAT Valerie Bailey Phillips is hereby appointed to serve as Chair of the Seniors Advisory Committee of Council from this date until the first Committee meeting in the 2026 calendar year.

    THAT Annette Krupicz is hereby appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the Seniors Advisory Committee of Council from this date until the first Committee meeting in the 2026 calendar year.

2025 Seniors Advisory Committee meeting dates were confirmed as follows: 

  • May 7, 2025 at 1pm
  • June 11, 2025 at 1pm
  • September 10, 2025 at 1pm
  • November 12, 2025 at 1pm

The Committee discussed timing of annual presentation to Haldimand County Council for Fall 2025. 

None. Councillor Metcalfe unable to attend this meeting. 

The Committee Chair provided an update of the findings in the Greater Hamilton Health Network's (GHHN) report Deep Dive: Older Adults and Caregivers in Haldimand, Population health review (2025). 

V. Bailey-Phillips and L. Thompson participated in the GHHN public consultations. The root causes of unfavorable health outcomes for older adults and caregivers in Haldimand County were found and described in the GHHN Report as the following three interconnected factors: 

1. Isolation resulting from a lack of transportation and stigma. 

2. Inadequate access to healthcare from a lack of services and difficulties navigating the system. 

3. Economic factors such as income inequality, rising costs of living and fraying social safety net. 

M. Knight provided an update on the work of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Committee. 

Discussion on Committee opportunities for involvement in improving quality of life and health outcomes for older adults living in Haldimand County such as increasing local coordination and collaboration of services and existing transportation assets/programs, intergenerational initiatives, awareness-raising activities that reduce stigma and ageism in Haldimand County. 

Brief discussion on Age-Friendly Communities work of McMaster University, the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Council on Aging (HCoA). 

The Committee Chair adjourned the meeting at 2:40pm.
